Ocracoke & Hatteras Islands, North Carolina

The Outer Banks are a string of barrier islands off the North Carolina coast.
Beautiful, rugged, and individual, they are to me about as creative a hotbed
as Key West. In fact, it is on these islands that I wrote my first book.

Each island has its charm and beauty and I love each one, but it's Hatteras
Island and Ocracoke Islands that I love the most.

Hatteras Island is home to the Cape Hatteras LIghthouse and is depicted
in several adventures in my first book. Just off these shores is The Graveyard
of the Atlantic
. So treacherous are these waters that many ships have
been lost.

Ocracoke Island, called the Jewel of the Outer Banks is a stunning strip
of land 14 miles long by half mile wide. All but a small part is designated
as National Parks land which means no condos on the beach and no
billboards on the roads. Lots of the Pug adventures were
written here. Ocracoke is also famous for being the stomping grounds
of the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

It's been a while since I've traveled to The Outer Banks but I thought you'd enjoy
these photos from my last trip there in 2006.

    Diane,
I like your new slide show!!!
We cruised to Ocracoke in 2004. One of these days I'll post that video clip of Mai Thai anchored in Silver Lake.
I thought about writing a childrens book about the ducklings. How did you get your published? By the way, we got seven ducklings and they have left the nest!

      Hi Eileen,

By all means, post the photos of your trip to Ocracoke Island. I'd love to see them! It's one of my favorite places.

      Your ducklings are too cute!

For those of you not familiar with Eileen, she and her husband "have been cruising full time on Mai Thai, a 37' powerboat, since 2001." They "travel up and down the U.S. East Coast, the Bahamas, the Florida Panhandle and the inland waterway (Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and Tennessee River)." * Her blog recaps those adventures.

A mother duck laid a few eggs in an empty flower pot. If you go to Eileen's blog you can see the photos of the ducks and the boat.

I'll email you privately and we can discuss publication options. I'm almost ready to send my second Pug At The Beach book to the printer. Unless the tweaking bug gets the better of me. You know how it is with writers, we can tweak the work until the cows come home!

        Diana,

Thank you for the writeup. This is why I love blogging! You can get to meet some great people and share information. Of course there is so much stuff out there you spend many a time weeding through them.

You inspire me to continue writing and perhaps get that "book" published.
