Beach Peas

I’ve might not have notice them if it hadn’t been for my dog, Buddy. He stopped to pee on a bush and there they were. Small and purple, Beach Peas are a flowering perennial vine that grow in the dunes nestled in with the other beach plants. They add a nice touch of color against the greens and blues that are the dunes and ocean. Buddy's pit stop gave me a chance to take these photos.

Too often we hurry through our lives anxious to get everything done in short order. Ticking off items on our to-do lists one by one, we make our way through a string of days until they’re nothing more than a blur. In doing so we miss so much: a loving gesture of a man towards the woman he loves, the surprised smile of a passing stranger, delighted to see a small white dog sitting contentedly in a bicycle basket, or a purple flower trailing over an ocean dune.

My to-do list. Gardening chores are on the back. Buddy getting ready to go for a bike ride.

If we pay attention we’ll discover the harmony that is evident in all areas of our lives. But we have to stop and take notice. At first, this requires a concentrated and diligent effort. Slow down. Calm down. Look around. Soon, the natural order of life takes hold and, in a casual and effortless fashion, a blending takes place so that harmony becomes the norm.

The ocean at Delray Beach.

The harmony of the various textures and colors are, in part, of what makes the beach so soothing. This morning, an east wind blew creating rough surf that I heard once I stepped out my door. The ocean was a magnificent turquoise blue. White, puffy clouds punctuated the sky. Runners and bicyclists flew by in brightly colored clothing. And the dunes sparkled with a small purple flower.

I invite you to notice the harmony in your life. I invite you to slow down, calm down, and look around.
