I Can See The Ocean From Here

Too often we find ourselves in the midst of adversity with nothing but obstacles in our way. Or so it seems.

Pug, in his adventure titled, Pug’s Pickup, says:

Obstacles abound.
Opportunities are scarce.
Endurance and perseverance rule.

In this adventure, Pug gets into his 1962 Willys pick up truck and moves to a “warmer sea, easier living, and the freedom to make his own rules.”

Packing for my relocation to a new home 1,500 miles away has been an interesting experience at best, a colossal pain at worst. This is the second time I’ve packed up a house in four years. The last time, I brought everything with me. This time, I’m scaling down considerably.

The first time I was easily overwhelmed at the enormity of the task. This time my attitude is much more laid back. What’s the difference?

Age has something to do with it. In theory I’m wiser because I am now older and have a few more years of life experience under my belt and as such know that things do eventually work out for the best.

Geography may be another aspect. I’m moving to the beach. Typically, time spent at the beach is cleansing, it’s cathartic. We live in sparsely decorated rented houses and take early morning walks on empty beaches. There is no room for too much stuff in a life whose philosophy is about simplification.

I choose to start this new life with less stuff and more grace.

With four weeks left before the move, I have a number of things which need a new home: a utility trailer, some furniture, and a collection of old typewriters to name a few. I have a choice. I could fret about the distribution of these things or I can realize that all is well. Everything will work out for the best. My load will be lightened. These possessions will find their way out of my life and into someone else’s even if it’s at the very last minute.

There is a peace in that.

In continually seeing the joy in the realization of this long held dream, regardless of the seeming obstacles, my endurance is strengthened. I see past the tunnel of boxes and unsold items to the light as it’s reflected off the water creating a shimmer on the ocean’s surface. All those little sparkly things look like diamonds dancing on the water.

There is a peace in that, too.

My wish for you is that you hold fast to your own joy in all times, adverse or not. It’s in your joy that you will find your own peace regardless of what obstacles lies in your path whether it’s a mountain pass or a sandy trail to the ocean’s edge.

You have just read a FNO-OSN (Friday Night Opus – On A Saturday Night) a column of casual observations on life from living on the beach.
